Dear beautiful heart,
This concept of energy element typing comes from temperament theory. The concept of four temperaments was developed by Hippocrates in the 5th century BC and Galen of Pergamen, a Roman physician, surgeon and philosopher around 200 AD. There were four temperaments – sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric and melancholy. They related to different fluids in the body.
During the 20th century, the terms temperament and personality became somewhat interchangeable when people such as William Marston, Carl Jung, Rudolf Steiner and Florence Littauer expanded on these types to produce the personality based models such as MBTI and DISC.
Concurrently, work was being done on the psychology of colour by scientists such as Isaac Newton and John Goethe in the 17th and 18th centuries. The temperament types and colour theory were brought together in the 1940s by people in the fashion world like Suzanne Caygill, Jane Segerstrom, Carole Jackson and Angela Wright who linked the seasons to colour. Colour selection was based on skin tone, hair and eye colour rather than temperament. In the 2000s Carol Tuttle replaced the word temperament with energy type to create her energy type system.
My energy element system uses the temperament system updated to reflect the energy element building blocks plus the seasonal colour palettes of Caygill and co to help you understand and work with your natural energy.
much love
Your soul
